We all need to take a break every now and then, a time to recharge our batteries and refresh. But what used to be a simple as grabbing a few essentials, booking something last minute and letting fate decide your desitination is now a thing of the past.
That’s right, you have children…..
There is a mountain of things to consider when holidaying with children. The what, where, why and when’s we used to not even have to consider and now at the forefront of planning.
But once you have picked your destination, accomodation and activites, there is still the daunting task of actually getting there.
By planning ahead you can minimise the chances of being ‘that’ family on the plane, or having a frustrated toddler crying in the car.
Consider the time you are leaving; travelling when your child would normally sleep is a big help, most children enjoy the gentle lulling of the wheels in motion.
Try for an afternoon or evening flight on long distances, as children will be more likely to sleep. If your flight is short, make sure your child is well rested and fed before takeoff, they will be more receptive to toy distractions or games on the flight.
If you are driving over a long distance, remember to include breaks. These not only help to break up the drive, but provide you with an opportunity to refresh. Children will settle better back into the trip if they have had a chance to stretch their legs, have a snack and perhaps a nappy change.
What to Pack
Have a small amount of baby essentials in a bag that you can access easily. The last thing you need in an upset baby moment on a plane is to be digging to China trying to find a dummy or their favourite toy. We love the Il Tutto Nico for travelling, It is large enough to carry all the baby essentials plus a jacket or blanket for baby. The front pockets are great for quick, easy access to things like dummies or passports.
The Il Tutto Olivia is a fab travel wallet; it is large enough to hold passports, cards and cash, and has a convenient carry strap if you want to carry it outside of your nappy bag.
Things like nappies, wipes and bottles should be packed according to the length of the drive or flight, you won’t need 10 nappies on a 2 hour drive. Include in the bag some tools of distraction and snacks.
Toy distractions will often work better if they are new. Something special just for your trip.
Things that allow older toddlers to be creative and problem solve and toys for babies to explore with their hands and mouths.
For snacking on the go, we love the Boon snack ball. It will keep all the snacking goodness contained and minimise frustrating spills.
Also be sure to carry lots of water, as babies and toddlers can dehydrate quickly, which can make them cranky and irritable.
For babies the Boon Squirt makes it easy to carry a prepared amount of solids and dipense without mess, and don’t forget a bib!
Safe and happy travels
